Tigers: an Endangered Species

The biggest big cats out there are almost gone.

Did you know that before the 1950’s there were about nine different species of tiger? It’s true, but now there are only five or six left. That means that three or four species got knocked out! In all, there are less than 3,000 tigers left in the wild. That may seem like a big number, but there are about 7 billion humans on the planet. That is infinitely more humans on the planet than tigers. The species that still are out there are Sumatran tigers, Bengal tigers, South China tigers, Indochinese tigers, Malayan tigers and Siberian tigers. All of these species are either considered endangered or very endangered. One of the main reasons why these big cats are shrinking in numbers is because of poaching, or illegally hunting an animal. Some families in Asia cannot keep their families needs supplied, so they hunt tigers. The tiger’s skins, meat and body parts are very precious in material, and can sell for a fortune. The families keep doing this, and more tigers are being killed. Another way that the big cats are dying is because of habitat loss. Tigers usually take up 100 sq kilometers. That is for just one tiger, and logging, which is basically uprooting trees, is causing them to lose territory. Tigers are very important to their environment. These big cats are just as much part of the ecosystem as anyone else. All of the tiger’s prey would overpopulate if the tiger was taken out of the equation. Then, the entire environment would collapse. The plants would die due to overgrazing, then the prey that eat the plants would die, then all of the other animals that ate them and each other would die. That would be terrible, and it would all be because tigers went extinct.

Some people may only know that tigers are big cats that have black stripes. For those people out there, and even some that know more, here is just a little bit more info. Tigers are the largest of the big cat family. Their weight can vary from 200 to 600 pounds. They live in the cool regions of Asia and the hot, humid Indonesian islands. Onekind.org states that a tiger is, “capable of killing animals over twice its size; it is one of nature’s most feared predators.” Tigers are the top of the food chain, no matter where they live. Also, tigers are very strong and athletic animals, which is why they can take down large prey. Mother tigers can have a litter of three to six cubs. The cubs become independent at 17 to 24 months old.

Just so you know, tigers are my favorite animals. I think that they are very cute and cool, especially their cubs. So when I saw them near the top of a list of the most endangered animals on allaboutwildlife.com,  I was worried, so I researched them some more. I found all of this information and wanted to spread awareness so that they might be able to be saved. I knew that the WWF did a lot for animals, so I checked them out. They were doing multiple things. For one, they were putting up “adopt a tiger” stuffed animals. Also, they were putting up cameras in the tiger’s realms. They called this movement TX2. WWF hoped to double the amount of tigers by the next year of the tiger. This helped them monitor the tigers and their prey. As if they had not done enough, WWF is also attempting to stop tiger trading. WWF is doing something, and we can do something too.  You might be wondering what it is that you can do. For one thing, you can donate money to organizations, such as WWF. If you don’t want to use your own money, than raise money for the organizations outside of your house or wherever, really. Another way is to begin recycling  more. Tigers are losing habitat due to logging, and the logging would lessen, maybe even stop because of us not using what the logs are used for, which is mainly paper products. Even though we can’t go straight to these places and stop them, we can do our part to help.

Tigers are very beautiful animals, and yet they are almost gone. If we can stop this, than these creatures will be able to live their lives happily, without being hunted. A reminder to all, how just one push can move mountains. We all have to work together, and it would pay off big time. Tigers are necessary to their environment, and would keep them in check. Some people may not know much about tigers, but they are very rare and need to be brought back. Maybe you think that they are already gone, but we can still hope, even if that is true. Other people think that there is a complete possibility that tigers could be brought back. If there is a possibility, than some organizations are doing their part. You could do your part as well.
