How well do you know Mrs. Delk?

Mrs. Delk is a teacher at Hermosa Valley School for sixth and seventh graders. We wanted to interview her because she is a nice person to be around and we would love to know more about her. We noticed that she always has a smile on her face while teaching and talking to students and parents, but realized we didn’t really know much about her. Whenever we go into her classroom at lunch she is frantically running around grabbing papers here and there, running to make copies or attached to her computer putting in grades or such. Students and teachers don’t just like her as a teacher, but as a person and friend too.

As most of you noticed, Mrs. Delk wasn’t here in the beginning of the year. Why might you ask? That is because she recently had a brain tumor removed. She had it inside her for twenty years now and they just found it a couple months ago! Last year is when she knew something was up. She was having problems hearing and when she was young she always thought there was something in her head. Luckily it didn’t grow big quickly. August- October 17 she was recovering. Not being there the first month of school especially when you are a teacher can be very difficult. Another reason we wanted to interview her was because we wanted to know if it was hard coming to school a month later.

Mrs. Delk has been teaching since 1984, which is 32 years! At the moment she teaches sixth grade language arts, sixth grade social studies, as well as seventh grade P.E. In the years she has been teaching she also taught science. However she has never taught math in the years she has been teaching for middle school. Her first year teaching she taught preschool. Then 1st grade, 1st and 2nd grade combined, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, then back to 6th grade and 7th grade.

Mrs. Delk lives in Hermosa beach along with her four children and her husband. She has three boys and one girl. Her daughter, Tara grew up playing soccer playing for a Galaxy team. However, she just recently stopped playing. She was a very good soccer player because her team won the State Cup. Her three sons are Trent, Ty, and Tanner. All of her kids have attended Hermosa Valley School and all have graduated. When Trent was born however they lived north of Fresno. All her kids were born in different areas.

Why might Mrs. Delk choose to teach here at Hermosa Valley School? Growing up she originally lived North of Fresno on Kutchi drive in Miwok Village. When Mrs. Delk was young an embarrassing moment she had was when she was in 1st grade. She was on the way to her school, which was 45 minutes away and she threw up grape juice. She explained that the juice slowly reached the front of the bus and that’s when the bus driver had to stop the bus. She said, ¨He put some sort of what looked like cat litter over it. As a child Mrs. Delk loved school. Especially kindergarten because her mom taught it. We asked if she got any type of special treatment in kindergarten. She said, ¨No not really. My mom tried to treat me like everyone else.¨

As a teacher we thought it was important to know if she was a morning person. We thought this was important because you need to get up early almost every single day and set up your lessons for the class. We wanted to know if she was so into teaching and sharing her knowledge with children that she was willing to get up early or if she just didn´t mind getting up early. As we know for most kids it’s always a struggle getting up. Most kids don’t want to have a job that involves getting up early almost every day. Mrs. Delk however is both a morning and night person. ¨I never get any sleep¨ she says.

Growing up Mrs. Delk was very athletic. She played on every sport team the school offered. Those sports were swimming, volleyball, basketball and more. When Mrs. Delk moved to Hermosa Beach and applied for a job they noticed on her application she had been very athletic. The district gave her a spot as a P.E. teacher. At the time she had four kids all under the age of nine years old, so she could easily go home and be a mom as well as being able to teach. Before teaching Mrs. Delk had a job at a Seafood Deli. Her job was to crack crabs and arrange fish. Her dream job was to become a nurse, but she failed chemistry so she couldn’t become one as she explained to us. Some of Mrs. Delk´s favorites are her favorite color, blue and green, favorite animal, a calf, favorite artist, Chris Tomley, and favorite type of food, Italian. Mrs. Delk has secret talents, but she says they are personal so she decided to not share them with us. She also knows ASL which is american sign language. Other facts about Mrs. Delk: loves traveling, recently went to the Bahamas to help refugees, and  her favorite subject to teach is reading.

After reading this we hope you have a better understanding about Mrs. Delk herself as well as her childhood and what her life was like when she was growing up. Her three sons are all in college now. Fun fact, Trent her oldest son works at Fresh Bothers in Redondo Beach. Her daughter however is still in high school at Mira Costa.
