Many people suffer from an extreme or rational fear of or aversion to something, also known as a phobia. To the sufferer, a phobia can seem unbearable or even life-threatening, while others might find these strange and bizarre phobias quite fascinating. There are many types of phobias, and today we will be listing the top 5 most common of them from around the world.
Aerophobia – Fear of Flying
While flying might be a normal everyday thing for most people, many fear taking flight. Aerophia is the fear of flying and of falling from a high place. Studies show that nearly 10% of people in the united states suffer from aerophobia. This phobia can cause people to go into a state of distress when climbing down from something or looking down from a high place. There are many people who could easily take a flight to places, but instead, chose to drive so they can avoid taking a plane. People get too caught up in not wanting to fly that they don’t even realize that driving is hundreds of times safer than driving.
Mysophobia – Fear of Germs
Mysophobia is the excessive fear of germs. This can also relate to an obsessive compulsive disorder – OCD. Having Mysophobia can lead to people getting various anxiety disorders. People with this phobia will constantly be washing their hands, brushing their teeth, etc. Some will take lots of time reading labels on food before eating, or making sure the food is not contaminated. People with a fear of germs don’t realize that our body actually needs germs to make our immune system strong.
Claustrophobia – Fear of Small or Compacted Places
Nearly 5 to 7% of the world’s population is known to suffer from Claustrophobia – the fear of small or restricted spaces. This phobia is mainly related to the fear of suffocation or the fear of restriction. The phobia has been highly studied by experts and scientists, though the sad fact remains that only 2% of its sufferers seek treatment. Claustrophobia is often confused with Claustrophobia which is the extreme fear of being trapped. Many people think too hard and it starts to become hard for them to breathe, but they don’t think about how oxygen is all around us all of the time.
Trypophobia – Fear of Holes
Trypophobia is the extreme and irrational fear of holes. For trypophobics, the sight of clusters of holes in various formations can cause intensely unpleasant reactions. While this fear might seem irrational to ‘normal’ people, the mere sight or thought of holes can set off a panic attack in the Trypophobia. Holes seem disgusting and gross to the sufferer and she/he goes to all lengths to avoid it. There are many people in the U.S. who think they have it, but it’s actually one of the least common phobias out there. Sure many people can’t even look at it, but there are many more people who can’t even look at the mere sight of objects such as coral, sponges, skin, honeycombs, and pretty much everything that has many holes in it.
Arachnophobia – Fear of Spiders
Nearly 30.5% of Arachnophobia sufferers the excessive fear of spiders or other arachnids like scorpions are living in the United States alone. It is one of the most common animal phobias around the world. People with other phobias do try hard to avoid what they fear, Arachnophobes however go to extreme lengths to ensure that their surroundings are free from spiders, often causing themselves a great deal of embarrassment, which is something most phobics try hard to avoid. Many people are just frightened by the thought of hairy legs crawling all over them, but they don’t think about how there are almost up to zero spider attacks a year.
In conclusion, phobias are one of the most common types of psychiatric disorders and can create a significant disruption in a person’s functioning and well-being. Fortunately, safe and effective treatments are available, unfortunately, for some phobias, like claustrophobia, treatments are very difficult to find.
