Should We Eat Animals?

Should We Eat Animals?

Meat supply and demand is rising very fast. It’s tripled in the last forty years alone. Currently, 70 billion animals are killed for food each year. This may not seem like much of a problem until you realize just how awful this is for the animals, for us as humans, and the environment. It is shocking that a law has not been made against the torture and murder of innocent beings.

The living conditions of these poor creatures are inhumane. Factory farms are where 99% of all our meat comes from. Animals in these factory farms live in truly harrowing conditions and die in even worse ways. People who work in the meat industry are almost always more concerned about the cost and profit of the product rather than the lives of the animals. Because of this, animals aren’t given enough space in their cage, because more space would cost more money.

For chickens, life is lived in dark sheds. The chickens are shoved so tightly into their cage that they cannot turn around for their entire life. Chickens are given many drugs to grow quicker than they otherwise would, and it is common for their legs and organs to not be able to keep up. Because of this, many die from heart attacks or organ failure.

As for pigs, it doesn’t get any better. A pig that is smaller than the other pigs, or a runt, is often killed by slamming their head repeatedly on the floor. For the other piglets, when they aren’t even a month old, they are taken away from their mother to be tortured. They have their tails cut off, their ears mutilated, and their teeth clipped in half, all without any pain relief. After this, they are shoved into pens that are far too crowded. They live on top of vomit, feces, and many times, other dead pigs. Pigs are given hardly any room to even move in. Like chicken, they  genetically modified to grow unnaturally fast. This can cause them to have horrible joint pain.Their lack of ventilation and room can cause many horrible diseases. When pigs are sick or injured, farmers choose to kill the pig, rather than give it the medicine or care that he needs to become healthy again, only because it is cheaper.

Cows aren’t treated like we would expect them to be, either. When we envision cows, we picture a nice sunny day and cows grazing along beautiful green grass. This is most definitely not what life is like for those poor cows who spend their life inside of a factory farm. Cows are taken away from their mother within hours of their birth. This is because farmers breed these animals purely to use the milk from the mother; regardless of the fact that it should be given to her baby. Instead of this, we take her baby away from her, steal her milk and then repeat the process over and over until she is so tired from giving birth to so many cows that she is considered “spent” and slaughtered after only five years, when cows usually live to be age twenty. What happens to the babies that this cow has produced? Well, male cows are useless to the dairy industry, so they are raised only for meat, and they spend their life inside on crowded concrete. Female cows, however, live the same life their mother has lived. A life of being exploited for her milk, the milk that belongs to her child, not to humans.

The process of how meat is made is horrifying, and something that many people choose not to think about. Other people are just unaware of how inhumane the meat industry is. 94% of Americans agree that animals raised for food should be kept safe from cruelty and abuse. However, they are unaware of how appalling the treatment that animals receive is, and the torture that they are supporting, as 97% of Americans eat meat.

Many people claim that this is okay because we need the animals for protein, and to help us grow strong. However, this is not true, as we can get protein from many other things. For example, protein comes from nuts, beans, seeds, grains, quinoa, and many more foods. Because of this, the argument that they are necessary to our diet seems like an excuse for wanting to eat meat, simply because it tastes good. In fact, the strongest animals in the world are herbivores (animals who only eat plants, instead of other animals), such as rhinos, elephants, and hippos. Even the strongest man in the world is a vegan, which proves that, like these other animals, meat, or any animal products for that matter, are not necessary for humans to become strong, like you have always been told.

Often times, people think that it is acceptable for animals to go through this because they’re not people, and that they are less smart, and therefore less valuable than people. If this is true, people would be okay with torturing and slaughtering their dogs, right? A pig has higher intelligence than a dog. In fact, a pig is as smart as a three year old human. Would you do this to a three year old child? It is obviously murder to do these unthinkable acts to a human, but why would it be okay to do it to a different species?

People also claim that it is okay for animals to do this because it’s their purpose. But, in reality, all beings have their own life. Humans should not have the right to decide how that life is spent, or how that life ends. They live for no one other than themself. As Alice Walker says, “The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites, or women for men.”

If we did not eat any animals, we would have enough food to feed the entire human population. Shockingly, the world already produces enough food to feed 10 billion people. So why is it that there are only seven billion of us and 850 million don’t have enough food? Well, in short, it’s because we’re feeding it all to animals. Thirteen pounds of grain is necessary to produce just one pound of meat. One acre of land can be used to produce 250 pounds of meat, or 25,000 pounds of plant based food. Not to mention the fact that 750 million people don’t have access to fresh drinking water, and we feed cows 12,009 gallons of water to get just one pound of beef. It is shocking and horrific that we could easily end world hunger, and are choosing not to, purely because we like how the meat tastes.

Not only is it inhumane, it is also unhealthy. The American Dietetic Association says that, “appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.” Some of the diseases that vegetarianism can help prevent include heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. In fact, biologically, humans are herbivores. Our lack of sharp teeth tells us that we aren’t even supposed to eat meat. In fact, according to Hesh Goldstein, author of Natural News Blog, humans have all the same characteristics as herbivores! It is crazy that we have all of the same features as herbivores, and yet we still tell ourselves that it is natural and healthy for us to eat other animals.

Many people tell that there are other ways to raise animals and we are just doing it the wrong way. But, you have to ask yourself, is there any right way to kill someone who doesn’t want to die? No matter how you do it, the fact stays the same. You are murdering someone. It doesn’t matter if they’ve had a happy life. It doesn’t matter if it was quick or painless. You are taking someone’s life, and that belongs to no one but themself.

Aside from this being morally incorrect, it is also horrible for the environment. According to Geoffrey Lean, “Livestock are responsible for 18% of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes, and all other forms of transportation combined.” The emissions from cows is what is causing this, as they release methane, which is a greenhouse gas that has twenty-three times CO2’s effect. A diet without animals may be the easiest way to help our planet, as it not necessary at all, and something that humans could thrive without.

These secrets have been kept from you for too long. The meat industry makes everything seem as if it is humane and kind, when in reality, it is quite the opposite. Don’t be brainwashed by these money-hungry monsters for any longer. Don’t contribute to this torture and murder any longer. Ask yourself: does that sandwich really taste that good?
