Have you ever wondered how skiing works or how it even started? Skiing is an extreme sport that requires a skier to glide over snow on skis. There are different kinds of skiing. Two popular types of skiing include Nordic which is cross country skiing and there’s alpine, which is downhill skiing. These different types of skiing have been around for a long time. The idea of skiing was first created in 5,000 BC by Russians trying to slide through the thick snows in the winter, and the Chinese did the same thing in 600 BC. In 1809, Olaf Rye became the first known ski jumper when he launched himself 9.5 meters in the air to impress his fellow soldiers. During the time around 1850, artisans in Telemark, Norway created the cambered ski.  It was a ski that would evenly distribute your weight across both skis so you can keep balance and not sink in the snow. Alpine skiing first became an Olympic sport in 1936. In 1948, the downhill and slalom skiing became an official Olympic sport at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

As skiing grew more popular, more people began to do new tricks. Some of these tricks or stunts include Corkscrew or “Cork”, Caballerial or “Cab”, Back flip, Front flip, disaster, etc. For a while, there weren’t any tricks just alpine and Nordic skiing.

Have you ever heard of a chairlift ( ski lift )?  Chairlifts are important vehicles that take you to the top of the mountain after youvé skied down. The world’s first three ski chairlifts were created for the ski resort in Sun Valley, Idaho in 1936. Before then, people had to hike to where they wanted to go ski. A chairlift is a type of aerial lift, which consists of a continuously circulating steel cable loop strung between two end terminals, and usually over intermediate towers, carrying a series of chairs. Chairlifts can be dangerous especially for little children. When you are on a chairlift there are no seatbelts. Their is a metal bar on some newer lifts but others won’t have a bar leaving you vulnerable to falling off.

Skiing is an expensive sport. There’s a lot more that you need than just a pair of skis. When you go skiing you need to have skis, boots, poles, water resistant gloves, ski helmet, goggles, sunglasses base layer, mid layer, ski jacket, and pants. If you’re going for your first time I would recommend renting all or almost all of the equipment. If you do know that you’re going a lot then you should purchase your own equipment.

I personally love skiing It is one of my favorite things to do.Skiing is an amazing, thrilling, fast paced extreme sport. If you haven´t gone skiing, then you should definitely try it out. It is one of my favorite things to do. Skiing is a great way to get a workout and you can burn lots of calories and for most it probably beats taking a jog on asphalt. Another great reason to go skiing is the beautiful scenery. Their is a tremendous amount of beauty in the mountains and when you’re on a chairlift you can almost see what it feels like to fly.
