The Benefits of Jumping Into Cold Water
How would you like to enjoy a plunge or dip in cold water to wake you up? That does not sound pleasant. NO WAY! Actually, a refreshing dip in the water is very healthy. Not convinced? Something that seems ridiculous, freezing and dumb is actually refreshing, healthy and smart. Studies suggest jumping in cold water often will provide many important health benefits.
I, the author of this article, take a dip in the cold ocean water every morning. Since I started dipping, I have not gotten sick and I feel less of an urge to fall asleep during the day. I started dipping in a sleep-away camp called Keewaydin. At first, I did not want to dip, but when I tried it, I fell in love with it. I decided to continue dipping at home and walk to the beach and jump in the cold ocean every morning, even in the coldest months of winter where I sometimes get out and half of my body is numb, but I still say TGID (thank god I dipped) and have a much better day.
Surprisingly, I am not the only dipper. I see surfers and some swimmers often taking a cold plunge. Famous author, Tony Robbins, also takes a dip in nearly freezing water daily. “Cold water immersion activates the body’s natural healing powers that can relieve the symptoms of many medical conditions and promote a sense of health and well-being.” says Tony Robbins.
Research shows there are many benefits to dipping. “If you want to improve your life on all fronts, think about taking a dip in your local cold water swimming pool. It will be one of the best decisions that you make.” According to multiple studies, dipping is shown to improve your body’s way to fight sickness and it is shown dippers are sick less often. Also, studies show dipping helps release chemicals that make you happier, so a dip a day can keep sadness away. In addition, it is hard for your body to stay warm when in a cold environment like water, so your body works hard to burn more calories by dipping. The last reason is dipping helps reduce stress. Stress is overwhelming. There is so much to do these days: sports, school/homework, and playing an instrument. Numerous studies have been done to show dipping reduces stress.
You’re probably wondering if you should dip. You should. Dipping is a big commitment, but it does not have to be an everyday routine. The more you dip the better, of course, but even if you dip often like every other day, you will still have a more healthy and refreshing day. See you out there.
